About the Cooley House:

The Cooley House was designed in 1908 (constructed in 1926) by acclaimed international architect Walter Burley Griffin for prominent Monroe resident Gilbert Brian "Captain" Cooley. Griffin was a member of the Prairie School, a young group of architects working in Chicago from 1900-1915 who created a uniquely American style of architecture. This new style was characterized by horizontal lines, hipped roofs, extended eaves, and prevalent bands of windows.

The Cooley House is one of the few examples of Prairie School residential architecture in the South. It is the last building by Griffin to be constructed in America, and it is the only U.S. building that reflects the later Australian period of Griffin’s career. The Cooley House was put on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and in 2006 it was listed by the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation as one of the state’s Top 10 Most Endangered Sites.

Restoration Project:

The City of Monroe and the Cooley House Foundation have joined efforts to save this architectural treasure and important part of Monroe's history. Once restored, the home will be opened to the public as a museum. Restoration began in 2008 with the roof.

Hours:

By appointment only until restoration is complete. Until that time, the Cooley House is open to the public several times a year. For notice of these dates and other educational events, please sign to receive the Cooley House newsletter by clicking here.
